THE ICE AGE

The Zen practice called "the way of the ice cube."

Adapted from "Nothing Special" by Charlotte Joko Beck

Much of the time humans are running around like ice cubes - bumping into one another. To protect ourselves, we FREEZE as hard as we can and hope that when we collide with others, they will shatter before we do. We might have a drink to SOFTEN US UP, but that is only temporary. We freeze again.

If we are fortunate, we meet an ice cube that has actually melted and become a PUDDLE. As we get closer to the ice cube that has decided to melt, we begin to melt also. At first we panic! It feels terrible! Yet this MELTING is absolutely necessary to become aware of our real selves.

Crying may happen. This feels like melting down into a puddle. The LETTING GO will lead you to your goal of freeing your voice from the physical body. Allow the NATURAL energy of the body to do the work. Melting may not be pleasant at first, but it leads to singing effortlessly.

CAUTION: ONE CAN'T LEARN FROM AN ICE CUBE!

START PUDDLING.
