The problems can be solved by getting in touch with your body. Once you begin to understand how it fuctions naturally, the freedom you once knew returns. The biggest problem is in understanding how the first octave of the voice functions. In every day speech we have buried our true sound in the tongue. Actors used to have to learn how to project their voices in a theatre. Now, with the advent of the microphone, this is no longer necessary. The machines do it for us – allowing us to ignore the body and stay stuck in this everyday speech. In singing, the Masters of the Universe decided there had to be an easier way to do it. They began using muscles to imitate a free sound. They decided to augment your buried voice by using more air pressure. Thus the work "support" came into being. Singers were told they had to work harder to make the voice grow and project. |
Singing is a feeling, it is not a doing. It is an awareness that must be learned. This awareness gets the singer or actor or lecturer out of the ego, and into the natural function of the vocal mechanism. We must get out of being mechanical. The free voice works by itself. It engages our mental, physical, and emotional bodies. It is not a machine, it is an instrument. Anyone learning to play an instrument understands it takes time to learn the coordination. There are so-called "naturals," but when the chips are down one had better know – on a very deep level – what is happening in the body. Then this "knowing" becomes your security. Making it happen seems secure, but when the voice starts going faulty, our fears return and block our thoughts and stop the natural function. Using only the amount of information necessary to create sound will return you to your natural voice. A feeling cannot be taught – it can only be hinted at until the singer finds his own coordination. You cannot teach the voice to sing – you just sit back and observe how it functions naturally.
